Can You Hold Back a Special Ed Student If You Think It’s Best?/a>
Can a special education student be held back if the parent thinks it’s best? Um well uh retention is uh a decision from the principal. Um so we should be making decisions based upon what’s appropriate for the child. Um I had a client recently ask um tell me that she wanted her fourth grader retained and I said we we I I can’t be on board with that cuz the student is already in special education. um we don’t have any data that says I mean she’s been in that graduating class now for 5 years right kindergarten through fourth grade and to pull her from her graduating peers um we don’t have data that supports that’s going to make up for the gap certainly if a child is a kindergartener and you believe they have not met the state expectations then I certainly would encourage the family to consider retention solely at kindergarten
