My name is Kathy Dhy and I’ve been driving a school bus for 17 years now. My name is Terry Thomas and I have been a bus aid for approximately 8 years. Having an aid on the bus is so helpful to me because I have children that you don’t know what they’re going to do. Um, some have seizures, some have um, behavior issues. the bus driver and I um you know, if we have a child that’s having a seizure, I have to alert the bus driver so that way she knows to pull over and to start timing the uh seizure. I have a lot of trust with my bus aid. She understands a lot of medical issues. Um she knows what to look for. We’ve discussed things. We’ve taken classes together. Sometimes the kid will get on a bus and they’ll just they’ll hug you. You know, you can’t help but hug them back. And that that in itself is, you know, that makes the whole day. Or they look at you and they give you a big smile. You know, you’re doing something right with your [Music] job. Kathy, Amanda’s having a seizure. Could you please time it? [Music] It’s okay, honey. It’s all right. I’m here. You’re okay. You’re okay. You’re okay. Being a special ed bus driver is demanding, rewarding, and requires drivers to focus on multiple tasks each school day. Here are some of the requirements. Make sure the bus is safe to operate. Be able to manage student behavior. inspect and tie down wheelchairs, administer first aid, and drive the bus in a manner that will get students to their destination safely. They also need to communicate with parents, staff, and supervisors. These can be demanding tasks for anyone to perform, and it would be nice if the driver had a helping hand when performing these tasks. Thus enters the school bus monitor. School bus monitors are another set of eyes and ears for the driver operating the bus. They are also there to perform many other tasks. In this video, we’re going to cover many of the tasks, duties, roles, and responsibilities that special needs bus monitors will need to know. In addition, we will give multiple demonstrations to show the importance of monitors on the special needs bus. We will cover many of the techniques that can be applied when dealing with student behavior. And we will cover the importance of communication between the school bus monitor and the school bus driver.
